Breed Information

Where do I start with this variety? They have so many incredible features. This was the very first type of chicken that I wanted and it took me 20 years to find them in Canada. Aside from its mythical name, the Golden Phoenix is best known for its stunning long tail. The elegant, long, flowing tail is supported by strong feathers and is enhanced by a partial non-molting gene. However, their striking appearance isn't due solely to their incredible tail feathers. Their saddle feathers grow to impressive lengths and the birds hold their stature proudly.

This old breed was derived from the Onagadori breed in the late eighteen hundreds and is a medium-sized bird. Green Valley Acres is a proud member of the American Phoenix Breeders Association and hopes to support the future of this incredible breed in Canada.

Our Flock & Update for 2023 Season

After searching for 20 years, we were able to successfully locate a Golden Phoenix trio in the spring of 2021. We hatched a good number of Golden Phoenix chicks in 2021 and will be used this large pool to split our Golden Phoenix into two separate lines in order to maintain as much genetic diversity as possible. In 2021, our selection process focused on removing any disqualifications, attention to health and vibrancy, and the distinguishing features of the tail. We ended up narrowing them down to the best 6% to keep as breeders for 2022. In 2022's selection process, we also chose only the top 6% to breed forward for 2023. I absolutely love this year's breeders and I can't wait to see what we're able to achieve again in 2023!

For anyone who's looking to understand more about what makes a quality Phoenix, I highly recommend purchasing a copy of the Standard of Perfection here.

Availability for 2023

We're only breeding our best trios again in 2023 so we will have limited availability again. Preorder early because aside from fulfilling the preorders, we're not likely to have extras during the season. Our breeding season depends on the hens and on the weather and will likely start in April or May. Please read our Frequently Asked Questions page for more details on timing of orders.

Hatching Eggs: Due to how much we narrowed down our Golden Phoenix breeding pens, we're only likely to have a max of 2 dozen eggs/week available. Feel free to add more to your order if you'd like, but if you do I might need to ship them separately which will require a second shipping charge. Please also click here for details on purchasing hatching eggs from us.

Chicks: Order above by adding to your cart and placing your order. Please also click here for details on purchasing chicks from us.

Pullets & Cockerels: "Pullet" is the term for a young female chicken and "cockerel" is the term for a young male chicken. They'll be 3-6 months old when they're ready for you and it will be in the fall. Order above by adding to your cart and placing your order.
