Svart Hona (aka Swedish Black Hen)

Breed Information

The most unique characteristic of Svart Honas is their fibromelanistic genetics which gives them their striking appearance. They are entirely black - feathers, combs, eyes, wattles, feet, and even their meat and bones. These bird are jet black but have a gorgeous iridescent green sheen in the sunlight and have been referred to as the "Lamborghini of the poultry world."

This breed is a Swedish landrace chicken and is visually similar to the Ayam Cemani but is hardier and more productive. Greenfire Farms wrote an excellent description of this breed: Greenfire Farms

It is difficult to find Svart Honas in Canada which are truly jet black and fibromelanistic. We located Svart Hona lines from 3 different provinces and chose the best birds from each of them. Because the Svart Hona is relatively new to North America, it is not currently listed in the APA's Standard of Perfection and there aren't many serious breeders focusing on this unique breed. I'm working with a mentor who has 40 years of breeding experience because I want to develop my line of Svart Honas to their maximum potential.

At the moment I'm very happy with the fibromelanistic traits and temperaments of my flock. These birds are hardy and active but also surprisingly friendly. This year I also selected my breeders for a larger sized body and higher egg productivity.

Please note that while I am extremely impressed with the fibromelanism in my flock, there is always an element of randomness in genetics and I cannot guarantee that any specific offspring will be perfect.

Availability for 2023

We sold out very early last year and we're only breeding our best trios again in 2023 so we will have limited availability again. Preorder early because aside from fulfilling the preorders, we're not likely to have extras during the season. Our breeding season depends on the hens and on the weather and will likely start in April or May. Please read our Frequently Asked Questions page for more details on timing of orders.

Hatching Eggs: Due to how much we narrowed down our Svart Hona breeding pens, we're only likely to have a max of 1 dozen eggs/week available. Feel free to add more to your order if you'd like, but if you do I might need to ship them separately which will require a second shipping charge.
